Sheriff Resigns after His Own Hit-and-Run Arrest

WIS TV reports that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has accepted the resignation of a sheriff who faces charges of being involved in a serious hit-and-run accident late last year. The sheriff resigned and apologized for his arrest. The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested the sheriff on charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say he was speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour, and he nearly lost control of his vehicle a number of times as he sped down the roadway. Video footage recorded by a patrol vehicle dash cam shows the sheriff driving erratically as he weaved in and out of traffic. It also shows police officers having to jump into his truck to stop it from rolling away at a traffic stop.

When police eventually stopped the sheriff, troopers conducted field sobriety tests, which indicated he was drunk. Earlier that evening, the sheriff had crashed his truck into another vehicle in a parking lot. Investigators later linked the sheriff’s truck to the accident and charged him with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Driver Identified in Fatal Crash

WRDW reports that a man died in a tragic merging accident on Cooks Bridge Road. South Carolina Highway Patrol was not immediately able to identify the driver, but a subsequent investigation revealed that he was a 58-year-old male.

According to police, the driver was travelling westbound on an adjoining road and pulled out into traffic on Cooks Bridge Road. A car already on the road was not able to stop and collided with the man’s car.

The driver who hit him was wearing a seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries. He is currently recovering in a nearby hospital. Police are still investigating the incident, and toxicology results are pending on the driver who died in the crash.
